Research Rationale

The target audience for my magazine will be around 14-17. This is also easier for me because I am able to get from my target audience more as I can go to the lower school and gather information to help my magazine. I can also use advantage of the students from the sixth-form and use information from there. This is good as I means I will get a information from all ages.

To get relevant research I will use qualitative research by having a focus group of each age. This will help me find out what age likes what and be able to try make something to suit everyone. I'll ask what they like to see in magazines and what they dislike. I'll also show them a verity of magazines and find out what stands out to them and why. I believe this will help me understand what they like more and its also a better way to get more information about what they like/dislike because surveys can be restricting. I will also be using quantitative research by handing out simple surveys to see what genre they prefer. also how much they would pay for a magazine.

I will also create online surveys to analyse them more and research more on my genre and look at those magazines and point out what works and what doesn't this will also help because they will clearly be a successful magazine already so by looking at them will help me create a good quality magazine too.

I found a verity of mastheads from different genres to get an idea of what to use for my magazine too look like successful magazine. It's a clear understanding that bright colours is a key to this as well as bold writing. Also a signature look e.g. billboard has bright colours in their letters clash has the 'SS' making an 'A' and 'S'. I will use these to help me create a good eye catching masthead. I also notice their not over complicated and its easy to read. Plain and simple seems to be extremely affect. I made this by using collage.com

In media studies  I am going to be designing a front page and double spread sheet for a magazine I will be making. I will be researching and analyzing different magazine to influence me into making a good quality magazine that suit my targeted audience. I will also be looking at how magazines, on how they use their font, colors,models (Camera angles) and layout in order to suit their targeted audience. 

I have to choice a genre which I feel strongly about and like. I am think about doing Hip Hop because It's the type of music I listen to and i think its best to work with what you know and at the moment a lot of new Hip Hop music is coming out. I also like Pop which I am also thinking about doing I like how they are represented and I feel each artist gets represent differently depending on what genre they are. However I am still unsure as to what genre I'm going to focus on which is why I will be looking at a variety of magazines and see how different magazines presents different artist depending on their genre. 

Throughout my course I will be researching how magazine present themselves, at the moment I've looked at a few magazines I like how 'Q' masthead is simple but is memorable to people. It makes me think It'll be good to have something simple but effective. I've also looked at Billboard, its interesting how different genre present themselves differently. I'll be looking at a lot more magazines to help me throughout my research and will show my work in different ways.
